What is Hand Wrap
Hand Pallet Wrap also know as Shrink Wrap is a cost effective and efficient way of securing goods onto a pallet for onward transport. It helps stabilise a load and reduces the risk of damage to your goods during transit. Choosing the right type of Pallet wrap will depend on the type of goods your wrapping, as lighter goods with smoother surfaces could use a thinner film, however heavier or more irregular shaped goods may require a thicker grade of wrap that comes with a higher puncture resistance.
Pallet wrapping by hand as opposed to using an automated pallet wrapper involves a much lighter roll which is easier to use and doesn’t require any machine maintenance costs. You also have the flexibility of being to wrap a pallet in any environment or are of the warehouse.
The pallet wrap sticks to itself as it’s being applied to the pallet of goods making a tight fit around the outside protecting the goods from dirt and dust. it also help protect the goods from rain when used in conjunction with a pallet top cover or hood. A pallet cover or hood is applied over the goods before the pallet wrap is applied, giving the waterproof protection required for transport/storage. Hand Pallet wrap is an ideal choice for any business that only wraps a small number of pallets. At Opak we offer a wide range of pallet wrap options in various colours, lengths and thicknesses.
Flush Core
Shrink wrap comes in many different sizes, lengths, widths etc. Apart from the strength of the film, the next big difference between roll types, is the core that the film is wound onto. On a flush core, also referred to as a standard core, the pallet wrap is wound close to the edge of the roll with around 1cm of the cardboard core sticking out.
The main advantage that a flush core has over an extended core, is the user can get the roll lower to the base of the pallet easier. This makes securing the goods to the pallet easier and quicker and can provide additional stability to the load in transit. To apply the pallet wrap with a flush core, the user can either allow the roll to rotate whilst keeping their fingers inserted into the ends of the roll as they walk round, or our specially designed dispensers can be used which provide a comfortable handle for the user to hold onto as they apply the wrap. We stock dispensers compatible for both 400mm and 500m wide rolls.
All our flush cores have a standardised core diameter 38mm for a 400mm wide roll, and 50mm diameter for a 500mm wide roll.
Extended Core
Using Palletwrap on an extended core makes it quicker and easier to wrap by hand as there is no need to use a manual dispenser. The core of the roll sticks out from the end of the roll by between 6-7 centimetres providing a handle at each end for the user to hold onto as they apply the pallet wrap. It also gives the user greater control over the amount of tension applied whist wrapping the pallet. The vast majority of our pallet wrap is on a cardboard core which can easily be recycled.
the internal core diameter of a 400mm wide roll is 38mm, whilst the diameter of a 500mm wide roll is 50mm.
Types of Film
Cast Film
Cast Film
The most common type of pallet wrap is a cast film, which is manufactured using a thermo-plastic material. Cast film is known for its clarity, consistency as well as being a quitter roll when unwinding. this makes it an ideal film type giving a consistent stretch as well as being able to read products like barcodes on boxes even when the pallet is wrapped. Cast film is typically sticky on one side which helps reduce the noise when unwinding it from the roll.
All our pallet wrap is fully recyclable.
Our Cast Film is a high performance blend film, which gives a higher strength and puncture resistance of traditional film which allows for reduced packaging waste. With the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) laws this can help reduce company costs. All of our Pallet wrap is made from 30% recycled content which not only makes it a more environmentally friendly option, but also makes it exempt from Plastic Packaging tax (PPT).
Blown EQ (Tacky)
Our blown equivalent films have been manufactured in way as to give the same characteristics as a traditional blown film. The main difference you will notice with our blown EQ films is that they are sticky (tacky) on both sides giving a greater adhesion when wrapping the pallet. This greater adhesion often makes the film less likely to rip and is often thought of as a stronger film than the cast equivalent, however it does make it a more noisy type of film to use when wrapping a pallet.
Blown EQ films are an ideal choice for wrapping pallets in a more dusty or colder environments. Our Blown EQ Film is a high performance blend film, which gives a higher strength and puncture resistance of traditional film reducing the amount of packaging waste, as well as being made from 30% recycled content which not only makes it a more environmentally friendly option, but also makes it exempt from Plastic Packaging tax (PPT).
Pre Stretched
Unlike a normal hand wrap film which has to be stretched during application, Pre Stretched film has already been stretched during the manufacturing process to it’s maximum strength. Pre stretched film is therefore thinner and lighter film but gives a great hold on the wrapped goods as the film wants to shrink back to its original shape pulling the goods together. With a thinner lighter film, you can wrap more but use fewer rolls of wrap in the process making it a very economical film. Our Pre Stretch wrap is available in a bulk order sold by the pallet (360 rolls), or in a boxed version which ideal for those requiring a lower volume. By using a thinner film, you also produce less packaging waste reducing your EPR commitments.
Different Film Grades
Pallet wrap film comes in many different grades or thicknesses. Simply put, the thicker the film, the higher the puncture resistance.
The thickness of a film is measured in Microns, or Mu for short. The higher the Mu, the thicker the film. Our Clear Cast and Blow EQ films are all high performance blended films which allows the film to be thinner whilst still providing the same strength and puncture resistance of a thicker film. We’ve categorised our films into different duty grades.
>
- Medium Duty – 12mu-17mu thickness. Pallet wraps in the 17mu range are often referred to as Medium Duty. Our Clear Pallet wrap is 12mu thick but giving the strength, performance and reliability equal to or greater than traditional 17mu films. This is the most common grade of film for general pallet wrapping.
- Heavy Duty – 16mu-20mu thickness. Pallet wraps in the 20mu range are often referred to as Heavy Duty. Our clear wrap gives the strength, performance and reliability equal to or greater than traditional 20mu films
- Heavy Plus Duty – 19mu-23mu thickness. Pallet wraps in the 23mu range are often referred to as Heavy Plus Duty. Our clear wrap gives the strength, performance and reliability equal to or greater than traditional 23mu films
- Heavy Ultra Duty – 25mu. Our Black Pallet wrap is available also in a Heavy Ultra duty range. it’s our strongest black wrap available in a 21mu thickness but gives the strength, performance and reliability equal to or greater than traditional 25mu films.
- Mega Plus Duty – 28mu-34mu. This is the toughest pallet wrap available and often referred to as Mega Plus Duty. Our clear wrap gives the strength, performance and reliability equal to or greater than traditional 34mu films. This is a popular film within the building trade due to it’s enhanced strength and thickness.
The type of wrap you will need will vary depending on the goods being wrapped.
Black Pallet Wrap
If you need to shield your goods from view, Black pallet wrap is go to choice due to it being opaque. Often referred to as security wrap, it provides all the benefits of a normal pallet wrap would to protect and stabilise the goods during transit as well as concealing the contents of the goods. Ideally you want to use a black pallet top cover to protect the full pallet from rain also, and being available in both clear and black allows you to fully conceal the entire pallet.
A choice of grades and widths are available to choose from to suit you business needs.
Coloured Pallet Wrap
We also offer a range of Coloured Pallet wrap in Blue, Red or White. Using a coloured wrap is often used by many businesses to colour code their goods/freight, making it easier to sort and identify different types of stocks, helps manage a busy warehouse or distribution centre which can save time and money.
Blue pallet wrap is often used in the food industry to wrap pallets/cages of chilled goods. This helps them stand out through the supply chain as a temperature critical pallet so they can be moved straight into the designated areas as a priority.
Although coloured pallet wrap is often used in the food industry, it used as tertiary packaging and is not suitable for direct food contact.
Mini Handy Wrap
Mini hand pallet wrap is extremely lightweight and easy to use method of wrapping items and is best used with a Mini Wrap handle dispenser. The versatility of mini hand wrap is one of its most valuable attributes. It is perfectly suited for bundling long, narrow lengths of material or consolidating awkwardly shaped items that conventional tapes or larger films struggle to manage effectively. Furthermore, it serves as an excellent way of providing an additional layer of protection to already boxed items, guarding against dust, moisture, and superficial damage during storage and transit.
Crucially, mini hand wrap is the ideal choice for wrapping smaller individual items where using standard, larger rolls of stretch film would be cumbersome, wasteful, or simply impractical. Its reduced size allows for precise and economical application, ensuring that you use only the material required for the task. Our Mini Wrap is available in either clear or black, giving you the option to shield the contents of your goods from view during transport. Our Mini hand is made from 30% recycled material making it exempt from PPT.
Pallet Stretch Netting
Pallet stretch netting gives all the same benefits of regular stretch wrap whilst allowing for air to circulate around the goods wrapped goods. This crucially helps prevent the build up of moisture and prevent the goods inside from spoiling. This type of wrap is best suited for wrapping plants, fruits and vegetables and other perishable goods for transport through the distribution network. Our stretch netting is made from 30% recycled content making it exempt from PPT.
